The official Western grading scale
Western grades in percentages. Passing grade: 50% (D band).
| Letter | Percentage |
|---|---|
| A+ | 90–100 |
| A | 80–89 |
| B | 70–79 |
| C | 60–69 |
| D | 50–59 |
| F | below 50 |
- Western grades in percentages — there is no official university-wide GPA. The registrar points students who need one to the OMSAS conversion table.
- All marks below 50% are failures; a mark below 40% is counted as 40% when averages are calculated.
- Term and cumulative averages for progression, scholarships and the Dean's Honour List are rounded to the nearest whole number, with .45 rounded up.
- Only A+ gets a plus — Western's bands are otherwise whole letters (A, B, C, D, F).
- Your transcript also prints each course's class average and class size.
Western grades — FAQ
What do I need on my final at Western?
Enter your current average and the final's weight above. The math: required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. If your course is 70% complete at 68% and the final is worth 30%, a 75% course grade needs about 91% on the final.
Does Western have a GPA?
No — Western does not issue grade points or a GPA. Transcripts show percentage grades. If a graduate or professional school asks for your GPA, use that application's own conversion (OMSAS for Ontario medical schools, for example); don't convert percentages yourself.
What is a passing grade at UWO?
50%. All marks below 50% are failures. Watch progression requirements though — modules and some programs require specific averages well above the bare pass.
How does Western average failing marks?
A failing mark from 40–49% counts as-is in your average, but anything below 40% is raised to 40% for the calculation — one catastrophic mark can't crater the average quite as far as the raw number suggests.
