- McMaster's GPA runs 0–12, not 0–4: grade points are weighted by course units and averaged.
- On McMaster's own 4.0-conversion column, an A converts to 3.9 — conversions between scales are not one-to-one, so use the official table for anything that matters.
- Since September 2018, only the most recent attempt of a repeated course counts in the cumulative GPA.
- Good standing needs a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5; from 3.0 to 3.4 you're on academic probation.
McMaster grades — FAQ
How does McMaster's 12-point GPA work?
Each letter grade is worth points on a 0–12 scale — A+ is 12, A is 11, A- is 10, down to D- at 1 and F at 0. Your GPA is those points weighted by each course's units. So a 9.0 GPA is a B+ average, not a 'nine out of ten'.
What is a 12-point McMaster GPA on the 4.0 scale?
There's no exact one-to-one mapping. McMaster's registrar publishes a conversion column — A+ (12) converts to 4.0, A (11) to 3.9, B+ (9) to 3.3, and so on — but external applications (like OMSAS) apply their own tables, so always use the table the application specifies.
What grade do I need to pass at McMaster?
D- — 1 grade point, or 50%. Anything from 0–49% is an F. Staying in a program is a higher bar: good standing needs a cumulative GPA of 3.5 on the 12-point scale.
Do repeated courses count twice in my McMaster GPA?
Not anymore. Since September 1, 2018, only your most recent attempt counts in the cumulative GPA. Before that date, every attempt counted — older transcripts read differently.
