The official Waterloo grading scale
Waterloo grades in percentages. Passing grade: 50%.
No letter grades and no GPA table: course results are percentages from 0–100, and averages are unit-weighted percentages.
- Waterloo grades on a 0–100 percentage scale in every faculty (since Fall 2001) — no letter grades, and no official GPA conversion table.
- A passing course grade is 50% or higher; some programs (Optometry, some Science plans) require 60.
- The 32 floor: any grade from 0–32 — and grades like WF and DNW — count as 32 when promotion and award averages are computed.
- Quest labels Engineering's averages 'Term GPA', but it's a unit-weighted percentage average, not a 4.0 GPA — and it isn't rounded.
Waterloo grades — FAQ
Does Waterloo use a GPA?
Waterloo grades on a 0–100 percentage scale and publishes no official 4.0 GPA conversion. Averages on your record — including what Quest calls 'Term GPA' — are unit-weighted percentages. If an application needs a 4.0-scale GPA, use that program's own conversion rules.
What do I need on the final at Waterloo?
Enter your current grade and the final's weight above. For example: at 72% going into a 40% final, you need 92% on the final for an 80 in the course, and about 40% to hold a 59.
What is Waterloo's 32 rule?
When Waterloo computes averages for promotion decisions and awards, any grade between 0 and 32 is counted as 32 — as are late-withdrawal and did-not-write grades like WF and DNW. Your transcript still shows the real grade.
What's a passing grade at Waterloo?
50% passes an undergraduate course in every faculty. Program averages are a separate bar — Engineering, for instance, needs a 60.000 term average (unrounded) to pass the term.
