How to Prepare for AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus AB covers roughly the same content as a first-semester university calculus course, but the exam format is distinctive and rewards specific preparation. The two halves — multiple choice and free response — each split into calculator and no-calculator sections. Students who prepare for only one section of the exam tend to underperform on the other.
Here's how to prepare for both.
The highest-value topics
Based on College Board released exams, these topics appear in nearly every sitting and account for the majority of the points:
- The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (both parts) — appears on nearly every FRQ
- Related rates and optimization problems
- Interpreting derivatives and integrals in context (usually a word problem with units)
- Riemann sums and the definite integral
- Differential equations and slope fields
- Analyzing functions with first and second derivatives
No-calculator vs calculator practice
The no-calculator section rewards fluency — you need to compute derivatives and integrals of standard functions without hesitation. Drill these until they feel automatic.
The calculator section rewards speed with the calculator — specifically, knowing how to compute definite integrals numerically, find intersection points, and evaluate derivatives at a point, all in under 30 seconds. Many students know the math but lose time fumbling with calculator syntax. Practice with your exact calculator model until every operation is muscle memory.
How to practice FRQs
The free-response section is scored on a rubric that rewards showing work and using proper notation. Every year, students lose points by writing dx/dy when they meant dy/dx, or by not showing the substitution step. Read the scoring guidelines for past FRQs — they tell you exactly what graders are looking for.
Do one full FRQ per day in the four weeks before the exam. Time yourself. Score against the rubric. Identify which question type costs you the most points and drill it.
The week before the exam
Take one full practice exam early in the week, under timed conditions, mimicking the real test structure. Review every mistake. Do targeted review on your weakest topics for three days. Rest the day before. Sleep matters more than cramming.
